A chill has been in the air here and has started to pull us more indoors. Well, that and the fact that this is the pacific northwest and it has been very wet outside. Put those two together and I think that it calls for a baking day once a week, no?
The rules are simple. It must be from scratch. All of us must help and be involved. Everyone helps clean up. See? Very easy. And with such yummy results after your hard efforts, how could they not comply?
The first week we made brownies from scratch. We used The Barefoot Contessa's Outrageous Brownies recipe. Oh, my. These are the best brownies you will ever eat. It makes a lot, so plan ahead on giving some away! We did this and then the next day we all came down with colds and were stuck with all of them to eat. Luckily, these freeze very well.
This last week, we made an apple pie to go along with Thanksgiving dinner. I peeled the apples then Hannah sliced all of them for the pie. It was a big pie and took her a long time to do it, but she stuck with it and sliced them all.
Becca's job was to help me with the crust and the rest of the filling for the pie. (You can see how our crust turned out. That was my fault and not hers. For some reason I have been able to make a good pie crust the last few times I've made pies. It's frustrating because I have never had problems before. Oh, well. I guess that means I just need more practice.) She did a great job with dealing with my problematic crust and reassued me several times that it was okay and that the pie will still taste great. And it did.
Now to decide what we will make this week. . .
